UPS has been using self-driving trucks across Arizona to deliver mail. UPS has a minority investment in TuSimple a self-driving company. Goal of TuSimple is to automate Trucking for long distances.
Since May this year, TuSimple has been delivering packages from Phoenix to Tucson and back which is a distance of 115 miles per route.
Tusimple has also partnered with UPS and its technology is used to deliver mail between Phoenix and Dallas which is 1000 mile trip.
TuSimple are leaders in the autonomous truck world and it claims it can cut the cost by 30% for companies that use their services.
The TuSimple trucks are equipped with LADER sensors and nine cameras, which can detect issues on the road from 1000 meters distance. The cameras and sensors can detect stalled vehicles, slow traffic, accidents, construction and anything that can be hindering the road.
The UPS partnership with Tusimple is about UPS learning how to reach level 4 of Truck automation, which is defines as a vehicle capable of performing all driving functions under certain conditions. The driver may have the option to control the vehicles. At level 4 there won’t be need of a person inside of the Truck.
Tusimple is a leader in this space and they are confident that in late 2020 or 2021 there should reach a point of commercial driverless options of the trucks.
